Biography
The son of a clergyman, Palmer ran away from home to Canada as a young man, to avoid parental pressure to become a lawyer. In Canada, he was given responsibility for care of the horses in the royal Canadian Mounted Police. He received no formal art training, but on moving to New York, earned a living as an artist for a while. When he returned to England in 1899, he had secured the important patronage of the Countess of Warwick and from this gained other important patrons and commissions including some from Edward VII and George V. he became the advisor to the Earl of Derby’s stud while continuing to pursue an artistic career.
